This guide describes a novel project structure for sky observations commonly assigned in introductory level astronomy students at either the high school or undergraduate level. The project is an outside class assignment optimized for a large course that meets during the day. The goal of this activity is for students to make independent observations at a fixed time of day to develop an understanding of: (1) how annual motion of the Earth relates to observed position of the Sun as it sets towards the West; and (2) changes in the Moon phase over the lunar month and how the phase of the Moon relates to its position in the sky relative to the Sun. Students synthesize their understanding by responding to summary questions at the conclusion of the project. The questions require students to use their collection of observations to make predictions about future sunset and Moon positions and Moon phases.

A critical component of this work is an associated scoring script, available through GitHub. The algorithm uses Sun and Moon position data and Moon phase data downloaded by the user from the United States Naval Observatory to score student input and provide feedback in an efficient manner. This allows instructors to assign and grade student observations even in a large university class.

Spatial Analysis and Mapping with R: A Short Tutorial

This tutorial introduces the reader to some of the amazing capabilities of R to work with and map geographic data. Geographic data are data that contain spatial attributes (or spatial data) that define a geographic space (location, area, elevation, etc.) and non spatial attributes (f.e., population density, pollutant concentrations, temperature).

This tutorial was developed for one the units of the course “ENVS 420: Research Seminar in Environmental Sciences” offered at the University of Baltimore. However, it is hoped that readers outside of ENVS 420 who are interested in geospatial analysis and with a basic familiarity of R find this tutorial useful.

The use of an integrated developer environment (IDE) or an IDE like configuration such as the IDE RStudio (https://rstudio.com/) or the Nvim-R plug-in for the integration of vim/neovim and R (https://github.com/ jalvesaq/Nvim-R/tree/stable) is recommended but not necessary.

The tutorial was written with RMarkdown (v. 2.6) (Allaire et al., 2020; Xie et al., 2018, 2020) in R (v. 4.2.3) (R Core Team, 2020).

This is an open-access lab manual for a historical geology lab focused on student observations.

Our goal in creating the material for this lab manual was to focus heavily on students making observations of geologic data, whether rocks, minerals, fossils, maps, graphs, and other things. We want students to look at things and wonder why, how, and when. The exercises and examples used in this book are scattered throughout the world. We wanted to make sure that one region of the world was not the sole focus of this work.

As you read the chapters, you’ll notice the tone of the text is very casual. This was important to us because many geology texts are dense and, at times, complicated to read because of the vocabulary. Complicated text is more than likely not going to be read by students. Therefore, we have tried to break down concepts and terms into simple explanations and discussions to better engage readers.

This course discusses fundamental traffic flow characteristics and traffic flow variables. Their definitions are presented, and visualization/analysis techniques are discussed and empirical facts are presented. The empirical relation between the flow variables and the bottleneck capacity analysis are discussed. Shockwave analysis and a review of macroscopic traffic flow models are presented. Traffic flow stability issues are discussed as well as numerical solution approaches. The lectures also show how macroscopic models are derived from microscopic principles. This course provides an overview of human factors relevant for the behavior of drivers. The car-following model and other approaches to describe the lateral driving task will be discussed. The lectures also pertains to general gap acceptance modeling and lane changing. Microscopic models for pedestrian flow behavior are discussed and an in depth discussion of microscopic simulation models will be presented. The study goals of this course are to gain insight into theory and modeling of traffic flow operations, to learn to apply theory and mathematical models to solve practical problems and to gain experience with using simulation programs for ex-ante assessment studies.

The lectures will discuss characteristics of urban water flows, hydraulics, hydrology and how to apply knowledge of these phenomena to the design and analysis of urban water systems. Integration of various scientific disciplines and technological and practical approaches is a central theme in this course.

Students will design an urban drainage system for a real case in the Netherlands or abroad using the Rational Method. They will use this design as input for a hydrodynamic computer model and perform model calculations for various conditions to check the performance of the designed system and improve where needed. They will prepare a written report of their data, design choices and results and present main results in a plenary session that concludes the lecture series.

Virtual Microscope for Earth Sciences

Using the virtual microscope, students will zoom, pan, and rotate specimens in variable light conditions, helping to develop their classification and identification skills without need for high cost microscopes and thin section preparation facilities. The virtual microscope may be used as a complete collection or reused and repurposed individually, since each specimen will have a unique URL. The intention is to engage and excite students in Earth science using rocks of the British Isles held in key collections, and aid teaching of mineral and rock identification skills in HE institutions and schools. We plan to explore continued expansion of the initial collection by offering a digitisation service to HE institutions and industry.
