    Meiosis and Sexual Reproduction Resources


    Meiosis is the process of cell division that produces haploid gametes.  In sexual reproduction haploid gametes combine through fertilization to form a genetically recombined diploid zygote.  Meiosis includes two successive divisions and processes such as crossing over and independent assortment that increase genetic variability in gametes produced.  Life cycles detail the events between meiosis and fertilization that vary for different multicellular organisms.

    This chapter covers meiosis I and meiosis II, including sources of genetic variation in gametes produced as well as a comparison to mitosis.  The importance of sexual reproduction in the context of evolution is a focus.  An overview of life cycles in a variety of multicellular organisms including animals, seed-less plants, and fungi.


    Student Assessment Activities

    Project 1:

    Mosses and many fungi have haploid dominant life cycles.  Explain the role of meiosis and how genetic variation in offspring is generated in these life cycles as compared to the diploid dominant life cycles of flowering plants and animals.

    Project 2:

    See Figure 13.6, focused on non-disjunction and review how this error in meiosis can occur. Then research one of the trisomies listed below.  To complete this assignment, prepare a document that includes the following (1) a definition of aneuploidy, (2) a comparison of monosomy and trisomy, (3) an explanation how non-disjunction occurs in both meiosis I and meiosis II (4) a description of the syndrome selected.  Be sure to cite all sources of information.

    Project 3:

    Prepare a table or diagram comparing mitosis and meiosis that includes both similarities and features unique to each process.
