Elementary Ergonomics is an introduction to basic physical ergonomics theory and practice for students of other - than Industrial Design Engineering of Delft University of Technology - institutes for higher learning, such as Dutch universities, universities of EU and non-EU countries, and universities of applied sciences. The course consists of the following topics: anthropometry (1D, 2D, 3D including digital human modelling), biomechanics, and comfort.

It will familiarize students with the materials currently used in responsible practice, as well as the material properties most relevant to assembly. The media landscape our students inhabit is rich with multimodal texts. Instructors might assume that because students are constantly consuming multimodal texts, they are adept at reading and composing them. However, that is not necessarily the case. Just as students need to be taught to critically analyze printed texts, they also need to be taught to critically analyze multimodal texts and recognize the rhetorical moves in such texts. Providing students with tools to analyze and compose a variety of texts also helps prepare them to adjust to the literacy demands of an increasingly digital communications environment, in which they will have to filter information and make sense of, assess, learn from, and compose multimodal texts.This module recommends texts that align with learning objectives focused on analyzing and composing with multimodal resources. Many of the suggested readings and activities described in the other modules of this guide can be applied to multimodal texts (e.g., analyzing multimodal texts instead of or alongside of primarily alphabetic texts). Below are additional resources and suggestions.

Furniture making is in many ways like bridge building, connections holding posts apart with spans to support a deck. Many architects have tried their hand at furniture design, Wright, Mies Van Der Rohe, Aalto, Saarinen, Le Corbusier, and Gerhy. We will review the history of furniture making in America with a visit to the Decorative Arts Collection at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and have Cambridge artist/craftsman Mitch Ryerson show us his work and talk about design process. Students will learn traditional woodworking techniques beginning with the use of hand tools, power tools and finally woodworking machines. Students will build a single piece of furniture of an original design that must support someone weighing 185 lbs. sitting on it 12 inches off the ground made primarily of wood. Students should expect to spend approximately 80 hours in the shop outside of class time. Preregistered architecture students will get first priority but first meeting attendance is mandatory. Twelve student maximum, no exceptions.
